| While everyone else on our course was off gallivanting in berlin, the girls and I decided we probably should do something productive with our week, so we decided a trip to Manchester was in order. As one my course mates come from that part of the country we had a fair chance of finding some galleries. |
The first gallery we visited was the Richard Goodall Gallery, we stumbled across it situated on a street what could only be described as ‘hip’. This gallery was full of very interesting pieces of contemporary art and photography. One piece that did catch my eye was a Brendan Dawes entitled Cinema Redux. Cinema Redux shows tiny frames each taken at one second intervals throughout a film. Bringing all these moments together it shows the film in all its glory. Personally I’m interested in digital media and I loved the way the tiny snapshots are all displayed collectively.
The Centre for Chinese contemporary art was another gallery we happened upon, this was interesting as it displayed art tackling problems that had no idea about, things that are happening on anther continent. I felt personally it was hard to connect with the artworks because they were so far from what we knew and understood however I still felt it was educational and enlightening to come and see.
To our disappointment the Corner house was installing the exhibition and sadly we couldn’t see what it involved although they had some interesting paintings in the café including a few very dark and mysterious pieces from Marco Rea.
Obviously being in Manchester we had to visit the Manchester art gallery. Which was very interesting although mostly displayed the traditional paintings, one exhibition we really enjoyed was by a media and textile artist Andrea Zapp. Working with scenes and photography from her travels, using urban and rural views and objects of culture she creates handmade silk dresses each with their own individual story. On each corner of the exhibition room features an iPad. Each dress also features in a unique online map which allows you to see the location and background of each individual dress.
Seeing art is invaluable to our course giving us inspiration and ideas to keep our practices on track and running smoothly and a day out with the girls never fails to be full of enjoyment and good company.
