Artist statement
Personally I aspire to create art that is accessible to the everyday person; art is a way to escape, to create another world, to get lost in something you’re passionate about. For me art makes the world more interesting it’s a way to express yourself in a way that makes it understandable for others, a way that shows your innermost thoughts and feelings in a unique way. In a world where people are buried in their own everyday life, art can make people stop, look up from their mobile phones and interact on a new level. I love immersing myself in the creative process. I feel art can open up people’s minds to new ideas, providing the chance to create something that affects everyday people, to make them look around and inspire them. Art is an instrument for countless ordinary people to make their mark on society; to make someone’s day brighter or create a mechanism for change. Our world has become a very visual one; art surrounds us and people are consciously and sub-consciously affected by what they see around them.
Identity is something that features greatly in my practice. The way we perceive and express ourselves. Factors such as age, ethnicity and gender can influence how we see ourselves and the way we are identified by others. Understanding who we are and what is meaningful to us as individuals. Looking at the processes of self-development through which we formulate a unique sense of ourselves and our relationship to the world outside us.
For a long time I have been interested in mixed media artwork, I enjoy the process of layering techniques to create the desired effect. Using my background in textiles and creative art I enjoy creating pieces involving a wide range of practices.
In the modern world art can reach a wide range of people. My aim is to make artwork that engages and communicates with everyday people on a level so that all people can understand it. I want to celebrate the individual, the uniqueness and the stories behind what makes us who we are.
